I've never taugh drums, cause I'm a novice but I had an idea that might help.
Perhaps you could try briding the gap between playing alone and playing along by setting a metronome to the speed of the song and getting them to play in time to that and counting out loud.
Then slowly intruduce the song and get them to continue counting out loud? or perhaps if you can time it right, start the song playing softly in the background in time with the metronome and slowly increase the volume of the song and decrease the volume of the metronome?
Hope that's not too silly of an idea.
