I have Tama Superstars also, Rob, and I have a G2 coated on the snare. It's got more ring than the Genera Dry that I used to use, but still controlled and fatter than a regular G1. It's just like you said you wanted in your post "not too deep, and not too crisp. For rock/metal to compliment my toms."

Maybe the Genera is the wrong choice then? I don't want it to sound dead. Just a decent, rounded attack.

What about the ambassador for the reso?
He still has the heads on his snare, which is weak. I haven't had a chance to swap the snare head.

If you are playing hard rock and aren't doing a lot of rolls, and lighter fare on the snare, a Genera Dry is great. In fact, I'm pulling the Genera Dry of one of mine to put on his.

But Yohin is correct, a G2 coated should work great (or an Emperor Coated).

Cheers for the opinions guys.

I'm gonna order a Hazy 300 for the reso, and a Genera HD and a coated G2 for the batter to try. I'll let you know how I get on when they arrive.

So my new snare heads arrived yesterday.

I've gone with the Genera HD over the Hazy 300 to start with. Really nice crisp punch to the snare now, very happy with it. Maybe slightly too highly tuned, so I might loosen it a bit, but overall a vast improvement on the stock heads.

Thanks again for everyones input.

KO, I have to admit that I don't have near the experience with other heads as some of the rest of you folks, but I don't really feel a problem with either the Genera Dry or the Genera HD Dry. I did have my drum teacher take a look at my snare tuning, and she suggested a tighter tuning to improve the stick response. I love the response I have gotten since then, and I found that I had been too obsessed with the idea of a "fat" sound on the snare. I like it better with a little crack to it.

I use the Genera Dry on a couple of my snares and like it fine. I can still make it sing by grabbing a little rime. Never tried the HD as I typically look for single-ply snare batters.

Coated resos would be of little value, as generally speaking the reso head isn't where the overtones are produced, but instead serves the purpose of allowing reverb in the drum to give you tone and volume. Overtones occur ont he batter head (hence why most dampening effects are used here such as moon gels, o-rings etc...) unless you've got a really ringy drum kit. The other reaosn for using coated is for the extra durability, again not an issue for reso heads.

Another option is REMO Pinstripes. I know you mentioned EVANS heads, however Remo pinstripes are designed quite specifically for a fat punchy low end sound without much reverb and the built in dampening stops overtones from occuring. you can also get coated pinstripes for extra durability, or for something a little different ebony pinstripes (black heads with white stripe) Just another option for you to consider
I'm sorry to say you are off the mark.

1. Coated batter heads are extremely common in the drum world. EXTREMELY common.

2. The resonant head makes a huge difference on the tone of the drum. The resonant head actually plays a larger role in producing the tone you hear away from the drums. I am speaking of overtones as well. Sure, they make drum heads that cut overtones on the batter side, but the resonant side plays just as large of a role in this (that is why the EC resonant heads were created). I personally enjoy overtones to an extent though!

3. I find that coated heads are not more durable than clear. Actually, with clear, I find you can use them more! Once the coating goes on a coated drum head, they don't sound anywhere near as good. With a clear drumhead, you don't have that problem.

Anywho, I love using Coated Emperors over Clear G1s (equivalent of using G2s over G1s) on my toms, and I use the Coated Controlled Sound Reverse Dot over Remo Ambassador Snare Side head on my snare.
