Default Kick Port

Drum Bum just added this new thing called a Kick Port. Pretty intriguing. Any of you guys own one? I'm thinking about doing a review for them but I don't have it in my hands yet. The Kickport apparently boosts the low end in your bass drum. It mounts in the bass drum head of all places (kinda weird), but artist players are raving about it. Check it out:

Now that's one of the most interesting new ideas I've seen in a long time. Thanks for the heads up Drummer!

Very interesting, but for those drummers, or studio engineers that like the kick mic deep in the drum, would that still help? Just curious if anyone knows yet, i'm excited to see a review on this!

FA, the Drum Bum site says that it fits in a 5"-5.5" ported head, so I would think that micing would not be much different than it would be if you were trying to get a mic deep in a 4" ported head. Also, since the KickPort focuses the sound coming out of the port, you might be able to get away with simply mic'ing at the port rather than having to get so far into the drum. Lots of interesting possibilities.

That's what I thought too. I could have used something like this kickport years ago when I had a 20" kick that I couldn't ever get to really sound out. I loved the drums for jazz gigs but had to get rid of them because the kick always sounded thin, even when mic'ed.

Marty, the Drum Bum website says that it fits into a 5"-5.5" port. If you already have one, you're good to go. If not, you just have to port the head, and insert the KickPort.

Good idea Russ maybe use red, green & white dingle ball fringe around the port like they done in the low-riders, back in the Cheech & Chong days...

Maybe we should be calling them "airports" since a lot of air gets pushed through there.

I used to play this room where the stage was high and there were tables right in front of the stage. The guests used to set up little napkins and watch them blow across the table from the air coming through the port of my bass drum.

This is a classic example of not knowing you need something until you see it, lol. I'm very interested to hear some reviews on this myself, to see if it lives up to its claims. If so, I guess I've got yet another thing to add to my already long wish list of drum goodies.

I saw this on another forum, and the inventor posted about it later but hasn't shown any numbers or details on how it does what it does. I havne't seen one in person and YouTube videos are about worthless for these things. So..... I'm gonna need to see some solid data before I blow that much money.
