Oh wow - that's presumably Paiste's 60-incher! I heard one years ago at a contemporary classical gig, and the sound is like thunder. To damp it, you have to lean your whole body onto it. You'll have to excuse me - I just have this thing about tam-tams (phnar).
ANYWAY - a fellow Paiste user here, at least in part as you can see from my sig. The Signatures are easily the most musical and versatile crashes I tried, although for me the A Masterhound hi hats just won out over Soundedges. I'm just having a slight worry about the china - I tried Zildjians and Sabians on the day, and this one sounded best to me. It's a great cymbal, but after a bit of playing I'm just a bit worried now that it's not quite "swishy" enough. The store have agreed to exchange it, but would anyone else have any ideas what to go for? I suspect I'll probably end up keeping it anyway!

Anyone know what one of these sounds like:
http://edinburgh.gumtree.com/edinburgh/67/54391867.html ?

If it's splashy i'd be interested in getting it, but if it's pingy i'm not so bothered.

Are there any major differences between PST 5 Rock & PST 5 Universals?

I disagree, usually when people who are not familiar with Paiste tend to mispronounce it. Its no big deal

I was at Fork's Drum Closet the other day to pick up some Moon Gel, and wandered into the cymbal room. I saw a Zildjian 18" Hybrid Crash and just had to hear it. I went to the front counter and grabbed demo sticks, and came back and played with it for a while. It sounded really good!

I went back up front to ask the price, and it was very, very reasonable, about half of retail. So I went back to grab it. it was in my hand and a 15" Paiste Signature Mellow Crash caught my eye for some reason. On a complete whim, I reached over and smacked it real hard with one of the sticks, and Oh My God! It had the exact sound I've been trying to EQ some of my other cymbals to get when recording. It absolutely spoke to me.

The price was about the same as the Zildjian, and I absolutely fell in love with the sound. Now I have a Sabian HHX 16" crash on my right and the Paiste on the left. They sound sooo good together!

Anyone else have any experience with the Mellow Crash? That was the first time I'd seen one in person, and I'm absolutely blown away by it.

I've had a couple in the past...traded them to get my Dark Energies. I love the sound of the Mellow Crashes.

Well I own a bunch of them, but I've never heard it pronounced out loud, haha. Just read the name, listened to sound clips, etc. So the guy asked me what I had, and I told him I had some "Payst Alphas" and he just laughed.

Doh! I used to mispronounce it too when I still had PST3's

That's why I'm going to stick with Sabian now. Easy to pronounce. Meinl? Zildjian? Who KNOWS what's going on there.

I smacked one the other day myself. I was pretty impressed by it. But then, i love signatures anyway!

I spent half an hour splashing around at GC today. I probably bugged the crap out of the guy working there, but i found it productive. I've been wanting a splash for a while, and i think i may have found a winner:

Although i think i'm gonna go with a 10"

Question Re: Paiste Cymbals

In the late 80's I purchased some Paiste hi-hats. The bottom hi-hat did not have a bell and had 4 air escape holes in it. Does anyone have any recollection of what model these may have been?

ALPHAS!!! MEAN as cymbals! I'm not sure if the new Alphas sound different to the old ones, but they sure do look beautiful!

I wish they where the new Brilliant models. They do not carry them yet. The sound clips on Paiste's web site sound a wee bit different than mine, But these still sound good.
