I was trying to see what kind of drums he was playing and thought I saw the DW logo but the lugs looked different to me or the lights caused them to ?
I have never seen DW acrylic drums.

Cool Re: The Who at the Superbowl

These days...
The Who are Townsend/Daltrey....
The rest are "Paid Players"
just like "Eagles"
it's great dat Zak (and his history)
are a longtime fixture...

I thot da custom zildjian's were a nice touch...
Large "crash /rides" have been a favorite of many large
"stadium rockers"
think matt sorum (g& r) who told me once that 20" ride cymbals
made great crashes for him in south american stadiums...
Anything less would not carry well enuff for him...

It aint jazz folks,,,,
"it's only rock 'n' roll & i like it....
Love it yes i do....."( to quote 2 other "Geritol" rockers.....)
(OH YEAH SPKNG OF KENNY JONES & DA STONES "MISS YOU"

I wonder what they got paid for that gig? They looked pretty old but I bet they were having a blast! I would love to be in my sixtys and rockin' out at the Superbowl. Zak Starkey played a toned down version of Keith Moon's fills but it sounded good nonetheless. The light show was awesome though!

I read that they don't receive any pay for that gig.

All expenses are taking care of for the band and its entourage.

Their record and digital download sales get a huge boost from the performance.

I read this on Wikipedia so I'm not sure if there is any truth to this though.

Okay, to clear up any misconceptions, Zak has always used larger cymbals (14" A Mastersound hi hats, (2) 22" K Crash/Rides, and a 22" K Ride) and I am willing to bet that color coating was similar to what Paiste did with their blue/red/green/yellow cymbals and what Ziljdian and Paiste have both done with black cymbals. So I doubt it was sustain reasons! Big cymbals just rock!

As for the performance, Townshend still rocks on the guitar, but he has lost his voice. Daltrey still has a bit of that voice we all remember. Not as good, but that is to be expected. I mean really, look at John Fogerty and listen to how different his voice is from when he was with CCR way back when. Entwistle's replacement (Townshend's son) brings the phunk on the bass, that's for sure! He really was solid! Overall, I thought that were better than some give them credit. Remember, Townshend and Daltrey are getting up there in years for performers of their caliber.

The lighting was spectacular I must say

Sorry don't mean to be questioning anything in this thread but what is this with "Townshend's Son" as Entwistle's replacement?

The person that's been playing for the Who that performed at the Super Bowl is named Pino Palladino. The guy is a living legend amongst bassists.

I think its sad that The Who being for The UK and Premier is made in the UK, they sould be using Premier. If they were good enough for Keith they should be good enough for Zak. And yes DW make clear drums,if you got the money. Sorry to vent but this would have been a good kick in the butt for Premier. God knows they need all the help and exposure they can get.

not tryin to start a fight as I have always liked the who but it always seemed to me that until the who's next album that keith moon was not a very good drummer at all.
just kind of a guy just flailing around the kit making noise. always struck me as sounding like a 10 year old banging on them. still I would have liked to seen the halftime show but was at work. hey guys if I am wrong please help me out here.just never got the deal with keith.

But to be fair, Pete Townsend legally adopted Palladino in the late 1990's, so both statements are indeed true...

People all over the internet are whining and hemming and hawing and nit-picking about The Who's mini-set.

Seriously, people need to go back and listen to Live At Leeds (1970, IIRC) and see if it's much different. IMHO, the problem is that so few people hear honest, live shows these days that anything that isn't compressed, dubbed, over EQ'd, lip synced and triggered just doesn't sound right to the majority of the folks out there. The great unwashed masses are used to hearing people who have performed recordings and not recorded performances.

I would guess it is because Zak has and endorsment deal with DW. He is obligated to play the manufacturers drums he endorses. My bet would be Premier offered him nothing or at least not as good a deal as DW. I find it interesting that he is not playing Ludwigs like his father however but the same probably applies, DW offered the best deal!

I saw the halftime show at the Super Bowl and enjoyed it very much. The Who and their music are legendary. Of course you can't expect to have the same experience now as you would have 20 or 30 years ago. it jus aint gonna happen. That being said, I feel, and have felt for along time now, that peoples expectation of what a "live" musical event should sound like has has really changed. Live sound has changed so much over the years. Used to be, the only mics used were for vocals. Unless it was a very large arena or festival setting, whole bands wern't normally put through a 34 channel board with a few thousand watts going through hugh speaker array. These days, that seems to be the norm. Even in a small venue, it seems to be the way to go. Please don't misunderstand me, because I'm all for getting the best sound possible, but there is an art to getting a good sound out of unmiked instruments. That's the feeling that I got out of this performance. It felt "LIVE". Not at all like a slick production that you see so much of these days. many kudos go to The Who, who really looked as if they were havin a blast.......jus as the did 30 years ago

I was at a really loud party, so maybe I didnt hear it as well as some, but I thought the show was pretty good. It's amazing to me that they could set all that up and pull a show like that off with what... 5, maybe 10 minutes of prep time?? I couldnt do that if you gave me a month. I think they've still got it.

That is very arguable. Every band I see is always putting on an authentic show. Brand New, Manchester Orchestra, Them Crooked Vultures, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Taking Back Sunday, Queens of the Stone Age, Jason Mraz, jeez, I could go on ALL day. But, I won't. I made my point clear. It seems like you are talking more about the top charters in pop music than anything else.

Personally, I dug the halftime. The Who aren't The Who anymore, as much if not more for the loss of Entwistle as Moonie, but I don't think they embarressed themselves.

Zak's kit looked great--acrylic DWs indeed!--and the monster cymbals had a nice wash that was reminiscent of Moon. Agreed that Daltrey and Townsend were definitely live, and if Zak wasn't, he duplicated some apparently off-hand fills spot-on--see 4:58-5:12
--despite the discrepancy in the final kick.

Good entertainment!

I'm talking about most people. What percentage of people actually go to live shows as opposed to the crap they normally see on TV? It's pretty small.
