Cymbal cleaner. Anything else and you risk damaging them. Besides, cymbal cleaner is pretty cheap.
Unless they are cheap or crappy cymbals and you don't care about them. Then just throw them in the dishwasher.
Hi,
I have some high hat cymbals that got some really bad dirt and stains on them.
If I can avoid buying cymbal cleaners I will but I wanna use house hold products. Anyone with some awesome ideas?
I realize this may be a repeat of an old thread so to spice it up it a bit what could I use to clean the metal parts on my drums?
Thanks!
Well....what's the fun in that?

I've heard that Coca-Cola makes a great cleaner. Doesn't get any cheaper than that!
all the best...
buy lemons, cut them in half and scrub your pies with the grain in a circular motion.
the lemon gets into the grooves plus the citric acid breaks the muck up.
wipe with a damp cloth and finish with a dry shammy or a shamwow or something of the sorts.
keep in mind that once something is polished it will tarnish again regardless of product used.
my pies need cleaning but i prefer the patina.

You can use a soft scrub cleaner with a soft sponge and a lot of water. Scrub with the "grain" following the tonal grooves. Normal cymbal cleaners don't seem to do a complete job when the cymbals are really dirty and stained.

I've used everything from toothpaste to coffee grounds to baking soda and vinegar....nothing worked as good as "Kickin' Brass" brand cymbal cleaner
Most definitely. As a matter of fact, there will be "NO LIMIT"... just an unending quagmire of musical genius.
I believe each cymbal maker makes their own brand of cleaner approved to work on their cymbals.

Nearly any metal polish will work on really ugly cymbals. Prepare to use a lot of elbow grease!(no, that's not a household cleaning agent but it is a household cleaner!) example is Brasso.
I use a recomended cleaning solution that I found on a website years ago that has worked wonders on any metal part of my set, cymbals included. Bar Keepers Friend, liquid dish soap and water made into a thin paste. I just use a soft clothe to put it on (old tee-shirt works great), then use a little heavier clothe (old sweat shirt), to polish it off. It has worked great for me, keeps the chrome looking great, and does well on stick marks and fingerprints on cymbals.
Just one of a thousand different ways that something can be cleaned. I never use any type of multi-purpose cleaner or glass cleaner. Leaves a film, and if it has ammonia, can actually cause damage to finishes and wraps. And I never use spray furniture polish,(Lemon Pledge is one type), because I worked for a fine furniture company and they NEVER recommended its use due to the fact that it can cause an actual breakdown of a wood finish over time. I can't prove it, I just figure better safe than sorry
There is no really easy way to clean, it's going to take a bit of elbow bending to get it done right, but in the long run, what ever you do, it's always well worth it.

Marketing tripe, Russ. That's kinda like claiming turtle wax will work well on a Chevy but not on a Dodge!

I use Martin guitar polish on drums and Wrights Copper Cream on cymbals.
all the best...
Agreed that it can be potentially used on other brands of cymbals, but the cleaner they put out offers a guarantee that it will work with the same brand cymbals you chose. I would also think any errors resulting from using proprietary cleaning products would be covered by warranty also, so it makes for a nice safety net.

What would you be referring to as far as errors go?
From the research I've done -
I checked with several of my local dealers (big and little boxes), looked at labels on the name brand bottles and even checked the Paiste web site and found no documentation as to warranty or guarantee when using the cleaners.
The most I could find was application instructions and general care.
Oh, I forgot to mention.
Without coaxing, most of the places I called recommended Groove Juice. Their reasoning was it went on easy like Windex (instead of a paste), was easy to use and did not remove logos.
Don't know if that'll help you or not.

That stuff is scary though. It is an acid of some kind and it burns if you get some on you. At least with house hold stuff, a mis-hap of some kind won't warrant a trip to Emergency. Also, I found it to work kinda unevenly. Some parts of the cymbal were absolutely gorgeous and some parts not so much. It seems to react to the actual grain of the metal the way stain does on wood. But that's only MY experience.
all the best...
windex will do the trick .
