I used to sing when I played.

As far as mics go, my favorite mics to sing through or take on the road were the Shure Beta 58. It's like the SM58's better looking/better smelling cousin.

As far as mounting, I used a plain ol' boom stand. The placement of the base was like this: Move it about a foot to the left of my throne, then almost a foot backwards. The boom would sort of come over my shoulder, and I'd just swing it out of the way when i wasn't using it. It took a while to find a good position, but I did eventually. It never really got in my way. I always like to face forward when I sang. I don't see how drummers will play while craning their necks to sing in the mic, but some do it every day.

Here's a pic of my mic.

I think headset mics look goofy, no matter who's wearing them. Plus I'm always afraid I'll sneeze in the thing or break the super-thin cable that the majority of them come with.
