Ok, as promised, I got around starting this thread. You name it....traditional Taiko drumming, tabla virtuosos, child prodigy piano players, metal bands from Burma's underground, you name it, post it. Just make sure nothing's djembe related...that's what the African music thread's for!

    I'll start. Tabla, anyone?

Cannot mention Japanese contemporary music without mentioning Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yellow Magic Orchestra. Ryuichi has worked with a lot of artists such as Madonna (he co-wrote her song "Rain" and was featured in the video), Iggy Pop, David Sylvian, Thomas Dolby,Youssou N'Dour, and David Byrne, as well having done soundtracks for movies such as "The Last Emperor", "The Little Buddha" and "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence".

    "Forbidden Colours" with David Sylvian.

    With Yellow Magic Orchestra

The drummer, Yukihiro Takahashi, himself a guitarist and pop singer in Japan, just like Sakamoto, has also collaborated with ex-Japan members (the band).....in Takahashi's case, he's worked with Japan's drummer, Steve Jansen (yet another vocalist and keyboardist!). Takahashi has also worked with guitarist Bill Nelson (Be-Bop Deluxe) and Iva Davies (vocalist from Icehouse).
