Best way to gently clean cymbals

I use a dry soft towel to "elbow grease" the fingerprints off. Everything else is just normal wear and tear.

Anyone playing their snare drum without snare wires?

You may be hearing the snare recording with only a batter head mic. This will diminish the perception of the snare wires. JMHO.
