A lot of those ska drummers use piccolo snares...but if you don't have the means to get one, you can somewhat replicate the sound with a semi-shallow wooden shelled snare with the heads cranked really tight....I had a 4" deep Pearl snare that i cranked the heads on, as tight as I could get them, and it kinda sounded like a "ska snare"
Oh, and the snares were on
Bigtall G is right ...most of em use piccolo snares... If you want to get a piccolo without spending a fortune try the Groove Percussion (i'm cringing while I'm typing lol) wood Piccolo. I picked one up just to have in my "arsenal" Its actually not a bad sounding piccolo for a cheap drum. It has a really high/tight crack. Major downside cheap lugs...constantly have to tighten em.. Good luck !!
