My 12" and 13" tom cause the snares on my snare drum to rattle when I hit them. I have the stock reso's on the toms and was curious if they could be the cause of this problem. Any idea's? Thanks! F/T

on the contrary, tune your toms up or down a very little bit on the bottem heads.
Maybe 1/8th turn 1 lug at a time. After every lug hit the tom and see if you snares still buzz.
That should do it.

its just one of those annoying things that u have no choice but 2 deal with (like skkol)
but if ur band is playing they wont b very noticiable esocaealliy if ur playing live
but not make the vibrations quieter, get new heads
I loosened up the bottom head on my snare a little bit and that got rid of most of it, and to get rid of a little more I snipped of 2 of the snare wires (20 strand now 18). I also repositioned my toms and that helped but not much.
Don't worry about it, when you play, no-one will notice. A few years back, when DDrum took the electronic kit world by storm, one of the thigs they did was to sample toms on a kit rather than seperately, that way they got some snare rattle, which made the kit sound more realistic.

Another question - if you change the tune on the toms to reduce snare buzz, how does that affect the overall tuning of the kit? I'm assuming the tuning isn't random, so if you change the tune of one or two toms, do you need to retune them all?

Jamie, the key is that when the snares are buzzing when you hit a tom, it means they are tuned in harmony with each other. I like to keep my toms tuned in 4ths, so I would choose to change the tuning of the snare's resonant head to change the harmonics. You may always have some, just because the more toms you have, the more chance that another tom with be in sympathetic harmony. If you want, though, you could change the tuning of the offending tom, and then retune all the toms and hope that you don't get a harmonic with another one.
