Rack tom: suspended, or stand mounted?
I'm curious about your opinions and preferences for the method of placing your rack toms, as it pertains to virgin kick drums. I'm setting up a Gretsch Renown 3 piece kit, with a 22" kick, a 10" rack tom and 16" floor tom. I do have the Gretsch GTS suspension system with the rack tom, as well as a Gibraltar SC-SLLRM L-rod mount, but I'm not 100% sure if that's the route I want to go. I've had 2 other virgin kicks in the past, and I've always used the included tom suspension system to hang my rack toms (one Tama kit and one Mapex kit) from adjacent cymbal stands. However, I know it's also very popular to use an additional snare stand to hold the rack tom(s). So let me hear your 2 cents on the subject. Pros and cons of each method, and which you prefer.

Gauger aluminum suspension mount hung off a Yamaha 800 Series triple hole stand along with cymbals. Light as a feather, modular, and minimal stuff to haul around.
Re: Rack tom: suspended, or stand mounted?
I tell you what.. I picked up that Ddrum kit from Bish...
I put the 12 on a snare sand and it just KILLED all of the tone.
I put it on a mount to a cymbal stand and it sings like a bird.
No matter what kind of pressure it just didn't like a snare basket.

I use one of these holding my 12” tom. The snare stand looks cool but it doesn’t let the shell resonate.

I place it on a snare stand. Don't tighten it. Works fine for me.

Well, being that I DO have the suspension mount, and I DON'T have a spare snare stand, I'll most likely go the suspension route. Thanks for your input guys!
Re: Rack tom: suspended, or stand mounted?
There will be no noticeable difference unless you want to hear 1, then, of course, it will sound drastically different.
This is another sales gimmick. Convince drummers that it will sound better and everybody runs off and buys 1.
Might as well tune your drums according to a Gatzen and Goode video.

To me, it's not about sound, it's about not having to carry an extra snare stand around! lol. 16X22, 9X10, 16X16. Attachment 15900

You mean I've been tuning them wrong all this time??? LOL
But yeah, I hear ya. And of course, the kit sounds totally different from the throne, as compared to the barstool. I appreciate your input!

I hear that as well! I guess I should have mentioned, I don't play out, just at home. But being that I have the equipment to suspend it, I'll probably do that.
