Can anyone explain what different qualities you get from different materials ie steel, brass, aluminum and anything else snares are constructed. I only have a couple of maple snares and although they have different layers/depth, they kinda have similar tonal qualities and I think its just time for a metal snare.

i dont know about steel brass or aluminum but my drum teacher has a carbon fiber snare(just as good or better than any metal) and that thing has the sickest pop iver ever heard. im pretty sure that any metal snare will give you a quicker snap than wood finishes
Steel and Brass will probably give you a more focused and sharper attack than Aluminum.
I play the Ludwig SupraPhonic and it is the aluminum alloy (Ludalloy) which has a wonderful crack but high ring to it. The Maple snares are, or can be, fantastic drums depending on the thickness of the shell. I also play a 1960's Slingerland 5 x 14 Maple snare and it has a darker and warmer tone than does the Supra. I tend to use this drum when I play with small jazz combos and, on occasion, with my Big Band. If you are going to get yourself another snare and already have a Maple, you would okay with a metal snare...chrome over brass is one of the best to have.
metal snares are louder than wood ones
Pearl metal snares are some of the best. I like them over my ludwigs but you have to find what you like:drums:
DW Bronze snare have very loud and 'high' pitched voice....
Great sounds for any rocker and Metalcore drummer....
I have 3 snares that all sound very different.
