Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
I'm soon to be in the market for a high end set....in my research I've settled on these 3 sets. Each with their own unique sound I really like, but one factor that I haven't looked into yet is it's re-sale value. I was wondering which one would hold it the best were I to get a serious case of GAS and want to trade up.
they are:
DW Performance Series
Yamaha Live/Oak Custom
Mapex Saturn IV
any opinions would be awesome
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
That's honestly a good question the only one I would say maybe has a little better resale is the dw but honestly being the performance and not the collectors that might hurt you to but do to the pedigree of dw I think the name would lift it above the Yamaha and mapex but you could honestly argue they would have just as high resale. Idk why but mapex never stood out as a high in kit to me growing up don't get me wrong the drums they are producing look amazing now.
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
Prety sure the dw perf. have the highest initial sale out of those 3 so I would think they would have a little higher resale as well but all depends on sizes looks and what someone is looking for.
Why not just hold out for a higher end set now? especially if you already have a kit to play on in the meantime.
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
i asked a similar question to this almost a year ago and the response buy used. unless its special sizes like for me i want a 24" kick if i get performance which would be my choice because its made in north america possibly California i know dw was trying to work them into the us but if you buy used most likely if you keep them in great condition you should get the same that you payed for.(think about it) but i do understand sometimes you just want a new kit not used but dw would be my personal choice. i changed the way i look at drums if i bought it i am going to keep it like my intermediate kit when i upgrade I'm keeping it.
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
My only advice is to buy used. If you only plan on keeping for a short time, any of these shouldn't lose too much value. I never consider resale whenever buying an instrument because I plan on keeping it for a long time. Buy exactly what you want and play that crap out of it.
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
If the DW kits is American made, it will hold its value best. check ebay it will show you American kits hold their value best with very few exceptions
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
Buy used. Buy american. In "classic" sizes. Not the silly power toms, super shallow FAST sizes or beer can kicks. If you're *really* concerned about resale-ability, buy Gretsch. Timeless, nothing trendy, and always a good market for them.
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
Here's the problem with reselling high end gear. You spend 2200 on a kit put together how YOU want. Now, you want to sell it for whatever reason, so you put it on Craigslist for lets say 1800 hundred. It's a nice kit, you took care of it, and you don't want to take a huge bath on your kit. The issue at hand, is me, looking to spend 2 grand on a kit. I don't want your hand me downs. I'm dropping big cash, I want new, and I want exactly what I want. Why should I pay 1800 for your used kit, when I could save a bit more, and get exactly what I want.

Tell me about it I've been trying to get rid of my c&c kit and I'm selling for less than half and no bites !!
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
They will all depreciate dramatically. Worrying about resale value when buying drums is a waste of energy. If you're that worried about it, buy used.
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
The only drums that ever hold their value are vintage collectables.

True, but even that's a crap shoot. I have a couple and you need to be choosy if you want see any appreciation or break even. Now if you have a vintage kit that you bought back when it was new............different story.

Not to be argumentative..............but $2K will not buy a new top-line shell pack.............but it will buy some great drums.
My USA Custom 18" floor tom is listed at $2,060.99............I would expect to get that tom for 60% of list........which is $1,236.59............add the sales tax and you will fork out over $1,330 for the floor tom. The bass drum is a bit more so three grand will get you the floor and the bass.............add a couple of rack toms and you are pushing $5K for Gretsch USA or DW Collectors..........assuming you have all the cymbals, hardware, snare, etc.
I agree however that todays market allows you to purchase an excellent kit for $2,200............I'd be patient and look for a good used set.
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
go used, i just got this for £800 22/16/14/12/10 plus snare, hi-hat stand and a gibralter rack.
it's in brand new condition, absolutely mint.
i was looking at a New Natal kit that was £1129, i got so much more for my money by going used, this Saturn kit is on ebay as a ex-dispaly from a shop for £1399 without the 142floor tom, now i've put my EC2's it really is like a brand new kit.

Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
I believe in buy and hold. Drums like cars are lousy for short term flipping. If you want to invest in something that will at least keep and hopefully rise in value, I strongly urge American. Historically, The American drums have risen in value when they reach vintage age.
For example...buy a Ford Mustang and a Honda Civic today. In 20 years the Mustang will be the more sought after car. It has absolutely nothing to do with the quality and performance of the Honda either. It all has to do with the economies of scale.
all the best...
Re: Which of these sets have the best trade/re-sale value
I do have the intention of buying used...even these days I've seen some DW Collectors 4pc for a hair under $1000 at Guitar Center used website...I'm going to wait and see what the Live customs and Saturn IVs will be going for used...but if there's a great deal on a Collectors, I won't hesitate to pull the trigger

I just picked 2200 as a number. Yeah, 2200 isn't complete high end, but its enough for some Starclassics. And at that price point, there's enough variety between all the major brands, that you should be able to find your sizes, in a finish, and a wood. But again, you are right, I don't think you can get a 3 piece Collectors finish ply, for under 2800. But don't quote me on that.
