One question I have about Bonham was how he actually actually practiced as a young guy. His house was very close to his neighbors and not sure how that worked out.
I love Bonham but i just cant wrap...
Hi Tom
I think you meant “ cant’” ?
This is a strange question but are most drummers good at painting/ drawing? I notice many famous musicians met in art school.
Maybe it pertains more to singers and guitarists.
When I was younger, Clive Burr could do no wrong, I loved his drumming. As I got older and wiser, I realized Nikko is a better drummer. Nikko is also a gentleman and such a nice guy. That said, I...
I just read an old interview of Blotzer. He started playing at 16 and was self taught.
On the first 2 albums( maybe more ) he did in fact only use a single bass. He added a second bass just for...
I really like Bobby’s playing on the very first Ratt album ( out of the cellar).
I have a few questions.
1) did Bobby use a double bass when recording that album?
2) how did he get his rack toms...
Guys
Is it uncommon to have two 18” medium crashes and a 20” ride?
Is having 2 of the same crash common? Its a 24” bass, a rack, and 2 floor toms.

Is the drum intro to ramble on an overdub?
Also, the middle part of “ whole lotta love “ where Bonham is using the hi hats and cymbol, Is that an overdub?
Gotta love Gary Mallabar.
I also think Bonham was influenced by Joe Morello. Look at Joe Morello’s solo with his hands, i think thats where Bonham got that from.
I know Gary used a cracked cymbol on “ rock n me” from book of dreams. Did he use that same cracked cymbol fly like an eagle and take the money and run?
Also, was it a cracked crash, a cracked ride,...
I cant imagine John Bonham never practiced. I dont care how good he was, he had to of practiced. How did he come up with all those cool grooves and play them flawlessly?
How about those triplets?...
ACDC is one of my all time favorite bands with Bon Scott. Phil Rudd is one of my influences.
Thats interesting. I think its great to always have 2 or 3 “ go to beats” that sound cool but can easily be played on any drum kit.
Many times when we play someone elses kit it can be very awkward...
Ok. I remember Phil Rudd, Steve Smith, and Tommy Lee using Sonor. I know Bernard Purdie uses them. Had Carmine Appice not called Ludwig for John Bonham, perhaps Bonham would of been a Sonor guy,...
Just wondering. Whenever you guys test out a new kit, a friends kit, or just hop on anyone elses, do you guys have a few basic “ go to “ licks you always seem to do?
The reason i ask, using someone...
Budget based ? That shows how long i’ve been out of the game. I always thought sonor were amongst the most expensive,
When i was a kid, i loved the way Phil Rudd of ac/dc drums sounded on “ for those about to rock”. He used a sonor signature series back then. To me sonor was the mercedes of drums. Anyone like them...
This has been discussed before as to whether Bonham used a drum stool or a guitar case for that opening drum part on ramble on. My question is this? When he goes from hitting the drum stool or guitar...
I remember hearing an interview and the drummer said he played in a lot of bands in and around LA back in the early 80’s because he had a reputation for keeping time. It may have been the drummer for...
Its funny, whenever i hear a drum solo by a rock artist, the first thing i do is listen to what he does on the snare drum. Thats probably a bit unfair since most concert go’ers care about the loud...
Great point. I actually matured very late in life hence my maturity in drums as well. I was a very late bloomer in every sense of the term.
I thought i would throw this one out there because i think its an interesting topic: drummer maturity. What i mean by that is for example, when i played drums in my teens i played a lot of the metal...
