    Re: Anyone here play bodhran?

Got it. I do play guitar, and I'm hoping they will feed into each other.

    Re: Anyone here play bodhran?

    Interesting views, Kris.

Thanks for the encouragement, Drumbledore and oaktree.

I had another good browse today and found some rudiments for bodhran and basic things, so I'll give that a bash...

    Re: Anyone here play bodhran?

OK, so I just found this:

YouTube - frame drum Video Podcast - Episode 14 - Tommy Hayes

Yes, I'd like to do that!

I'm trying to work out the different ways of holding the tipper, and...

    Re: Not Your Average Newbie

    Hi Nomad!

I don't use the words 'soccer' or 'mom', but I am a mother, and I can identify with your desire to learn drums. Now, I would never have gone out and bought myself a drumkit. But now that...

    Re: Drum Lessons or not?

Thanks MartyM. So at present, he gets a weekly lessons with a percussion teacher who makes sure he is holding the sticks properly and they do some rudiments, some simple rhythms and some tunes on...

    Re: Lessons or not?

Hey, thanks for all the positive vibes!

We are waiting for a book from Amazon - don't know which as it's a gift from a relative, but I think it has a play-along CD.

But I think I will just...

Re: what kind of kit for child?

Wow! You must work hard to run a tight ship like this.

For myself, I'm done with spending money - if my son wants fancy cymbals or anything, he can spend his own money on them! :)

    Re: Lessons or not?

Three sets of lessons is too much, you are right. I personally don't think two instruments is too much. At that age I was learning two instruments - I practiced every day and did so for many years....

    Drum Lessons or not?

I'm enough of a musician (not drums) to know that generally lessons are the way to go, but the situation is slightly more complex. I'll explain.

My son is 10 years old, he just got a drum kit for...

Zeta, this has been on my mind. I will open another thread, so as not to go off-topic in this folder.

Re: what kind of kit for child?

It seems, from what I can tell, perfectly adequate for a beginner, and has all the 'draw' that it needs to keep him going. We went for a walk yesterday, but 10 minutes away from the car he said,...

Re: what kind of kit for child?

    Merry Christmas! :punk:

    Update:

    I bought this:

My son is thrilled to bits. We got it assembled and tuned and the rest of the day...
  15. Re: Drum Tuning Bible.. questions answered!

Thanks crazyman and brutal, it is beginning to make a bit more sense now.

The kit has arrived, though I've not taken it out of the box, I did watch the DVD that comes with it, explaining how to...

    Re: Floor Tom Tuning?

Useful discussion. I think I'm beginning to understand the issues now. Thanks. :)
  17. Re: Drum Tuning Bible.. questions answered!

So that's what he was using! I thought maybe that was cymbal-abuse. :drums:

I'm still confused about how the two heads interact, and if I hear a problem, how I know which head to tackle.
  18. Re: Drum Tuning Bible.. questions answered!

    Thanks cycledude and Sqadan.

There was a Bab Gadzan video that I almost understood.

However the Yamaha one - I feel really uneasy about putting pressure on the head like that. I just don't know...
  19. Re: Drum Tuning Bible.. questions answered!

Thanks Xsabers. It's a complete kit (and I got silencers), but I've been told it comes Russian doll style and I'll need to put the heads on. So the batter heads are thicker - I'll remember that,...

  21. Re: Drum Tuning Bible.. questions answered!

Yikes! This is way over my head.

I've bought my son a drum kit for Christmas. It's not delivered yet, but I went to the shop today to ask how to set it up and they told me I would need to tune it....

Re: what kind of kit for child?

Yes, I think he needs to sound 'cool' - and I want him to keep going, at least for a while.

The measurement was with hi hat and crash cymbals - if he needs more, or bigger ones later, we'll need...

Re: what kind of kit for child?

Thanks itchie, my main problem is space, and there's not a lot of choice of 2nd hand kits. I've certainly been warned off junior kits. My plan is to buy, and then sell if he doens't stick to it. That...

Re: what kind of kit for child?

    This is a test reply.

This is really strange: I reply. Sometimes the reply appears immediately, sometimes not for a looooooong time.

I did reply, DL Dante, if it doesn't appear soon, I'll...
