Well I have 3 sets of congas and want to learn. I know the basics, but need to just get out and learn and play and grow. It's a shame that I'm dressed up and no place to go. In rural South Carolina.

Are the congas and latin percussion instruments going out of style? There is not much here on this site, and nuthin going on around either. I think this genre is fizzling out? Any thoughts?
Thanks for your input. I just sold them, so its all good.
Hey MD, thanks for your post. I am looking for someone who really knows how to play and also does the conga/bongo stuff too, and thought that this would be the best place to start. Will also put in...
Hi, I have a pair of timbales and was going to sell them. But I thought that I'd look for a teacher first before giving up on playing. I live in Columbia, SC and am seeing if there is anyone local...
What do you think about the hickory 50th anniverary LP drums? Any better than the siam oak/rubber? How do they compare with Ash?
Thanks for the info.
I only want mules for my congas though. Will keep looking for mule skin distributors.
Never mind, to answer my own question I saw that Mike from L and H stopped producing skins last year.
does anyone know what happened to L and H percussion?. Was going to recommend them to a friend but I see that they are no longer in business?
if that's the case, can anyone recommend to me a...
Now that that the first part has been done, my drums are waiting to dry!
My question now is: Is it bad, normal, minor problem if the skins have a slight 'lip' to them (over tight?). Also, how much...
Yes. Thanks for your input!
I woke up in the middle of the night thinking that it would take anywhere from 5-9 hours. So in went the skins at 3:30 this A.M. By 6:30 when I woke up I was surprised...
Changing Conga skins
Preparing the hoop
1. Soak skins for 8-9 hours
2. Put on table, smooth side up
3. Place hoop over center of skin
4. Fold skin over ring, but under rim- how tight (does it...
Actually, I do have a ton of patience and discipline enough to stay away. Plus I have another drum I can play that will not be reskinned. I live in the South and it is still rather Hot here, will be...
Thanks! Just went to Lowes and they do not have any. Will have to go to local hardware store. Any particular size/diameter that you used? Once again, thanks!
Sometimes, depending on the congas and thickness of the skin, the lugs can be too short to get a nut on them when tucking. I went to the hardware store and bought a couple of long J-bolts to use for...
Hey Neurotic,
My follow up question to you is- why don't the drums you have suit a learner? That is a great combo. Also, it depends upon what are you looking to play- salsa, rumba, etc?
I have...
Actually- 60 buck skins! but I'm sure worth it all!
I have been searching the web for conga demonstrations/lessons/ etc. In my opinion Panga is the best. He always uses the clave, he seems to have natural talent with the rhythms, enjoys playing on...
Yes, I can't wait to hear the mules. I hope they are what I am looking for. I bought some rings separately, and am saving the stock water buffalo heads in case I need them.
Just the pearl I was looking for! there is no substitute for experience and wisdom. I will get some J bolts, this should take some of the headache and anxiety about that part out of the experience! ...
I just received 3 mule skins to change on my drums. I hope to change them soon. Any suggestions? Should I do them one week at a time as there will be a learning curve, or just go for them all at...
Thanks for the description Gretschead! I will practice away! I believe I am doing it that way. Maybe one day get myself on You tube for critique of my playing...
I just received my 10"/ requinto a few days ago. I can tell why congueros use these for their solos- there is a huge difference with the sound of the smaller/higher drums! I was trying to learn the...
that would be great!
I think at this point, playing with other musicians is the next step. The only problem I have is that I don't know any other musicians that play this type of music.
in the...
Great! thanks for your reply, cat. I guess you tube and drumchat are my teacher for now!
