    this is a tough answer for me because I own both Pork Pie and Yamaha.

    on my practice set I used the mesh heads but for the BD I bought one of the practice pad stands for bass drums specifically . I also destroyed the mesh heads.

    I always use the first way and let me fingers snap the stick back for the rebound second hit.
    That way, the first hit and the second hit are more consistent in tone and volume.
