Hand drums can be a nice change from the kit. I play an ashiko occasionally. It goes great with acoustic guitar too!
I'm working on smoothing out my sound playing that rock shuffle. It's easy to play but hard to make groovy.

Yes raise your toms up by bringing the poles out of the bass drum more. Then level your toms out and swivel them inward towards eachother.

I'm a parent, and I don't think you should have your drum sticks taken away. That's completely counterproductive! It makes me think of the guitar player's dad in School of Rock.
