Agreed. Oak is a harder wood than hickory, but it does tend to simply snap right in half, whereas hickory will splinter and "chip away" before actually breaking. Usually.

Yoda nailed it. Those are Remo Ambassadors, with a 1-inch wide strip of coating around the edge, made specifically for DW for installation on new kits.

I just put a Remo Emperor X on my snare...it's a 2-ply head, a clear Ambassador Black Dot with a coated Ambassador over it.... All I can say is WOW!!!! Love, love, LOVE that head!!
