Here is a pic of my Noble & Cooley Horizon Maples (Cherry Finish) at the factory before I picked them up last year. The pic just doesn't do the finish justice.
...
I voted Gretsch for my Renowns but my other kits are Noble & Cooley and not listed.
:clap:My first Gretsch kit was the Catalina Jazz in Walnut Glaze. Beautiful finish that garnered many compliments. Can't go wrong with either.
Come on over Johnny, I even have a spare room so you can save on a Hotel.
I do have friends over for jam sessions, nothing like a few crazy old drummers making joyful noise together.
I would like to thank everyone for the kind comments on my Drum Room, it is a great thing to have a wife who supports my addiction. She is getting me the matching 14" floor Tom to complete my...
Thanks Wolvie, I do have an "Ins Rider" for the Kits and everything that goes with them.
Like Olimpass stated, the Cymbals and hardware are worth nearly as much as the Kits themselves. I have a...
You know SL, it all comes down to mood. I have the kits tuned differently with different with types of heads and I usually have a tune in my head when I walk downstairs.
If I am working on Jazz...
Well I finally have all four kits up at once. I found the Gretsch painting at a local Wine Bar and talked the owner into selling it. Had not seen a drum painting before and with the subject I just...
The first question is do you want to sell the kit? The sound you are getting from those aged shells cannot be duplicated. If you do order a new USA kit, they will sound great but nothing like those...
None of those for me, all are quality and you can get a good sound out of them all. For me it is Gretsch Renown and Noble & Cooley Horizons. Just love the sound from both, the CD Maples are right...
Totally understand the excitement of getting a new kit, you will love the shorter toms as those are the same size of my new kit along with 13X10 and I had the floor tom built as 16X14.
Enjoy to the...
You are correct AC2, I believe that Russ included them because of the great diversity within Jazz. As drummer stated, Jazz is a very broad term these days and covers so many aspects of music...
I would love to, but as a child of the 60's I am lucky I can post pics. I do have an audio recorder and hopefully I can figure that out this weekend. Just need a good tutorial on it.
Thanks Bish,
I have always thought that I could find better sounding drums than either the Renowns or the CD Maples, but these Horizon shells just sing. I cannot figure out if it is the fact that...
Thanks to everyone for the kind words on the kit. The stain is Cherry and the finish is Matte. The pictures do not do justice to the color, kind of a wine red/purple. The light natural finish on...
Back home with the new kit, as promised here are some pics. Changed heads and tuned. Still tinkering with the setup.

Spent three hours at Noble & Cooley this afternoon, took a tour of the factory and Museum. Jay and Nick Jones went out of their way to make my wife and I feel at home. The explained and...
Rob you are absolutely correct. I forgot that fact in my answer on the finish and that even though the shells are 6/7 maple the inner ply is Mahogany. That is what gives the Horizons their unique...
No Stain on the inside Artstar, some of the stain bleed thru but the inside of the shells were taped and papered. That will come off once the bearing edges are complete. That is the natural maple...
Thanks Russ, this pic is right after they pulled the paper off the inner shell surface and before the rough cut of the bearing edges. Once complete the finish will be off any of the finished edges.
Well here is latest pic. Finish is complete, just have to do the bearing edges and drill for the hardware. Only two more weeks till I get these babies home.

I am using the EC2s over G1 clear on my Cherry Burst Renowns. Love the sound as I use this kit for more pop/rock. I will admit that I use Evans, Remo and Aquarian heads. Different sounds for...
Thanks Rob, I wondered who the lucky dog was for getting that kit off the Bay. I looked at those also, just could not justify adding another kit to the stable right now (tax season).
I asked...
Well folks, Nick has finished with the Poly coats and he plans on doing the Matte this week. Hopefully I can pick them up at the factory in mid April.
I will continue posting pics as the build...
