I just picked up a Meinl Headliner Cajon this weekend and having lots of fun just bumping along with songs and trying to move some beats I've learned on the set to the cajon.

Anybody have any tips...

Mutes definitely reduce the sound, but depending on your house layout and walls it may still be heard. Whether or not it'll keep anyone awake - only they can say for sure.

Not that I'm experienced or anything, but I've been learning to pay attention to what the bass is doing on the low end for your bass rhythm and what the guitars are accenting up top and build beats...
