I'd say fewer strands on the snare bed is a good idea to get a mellower, less cutting sound.

Hi there,
I have a kit of Gretsch Renown Maples with Evans coated G2s over Resos. I really like the open sound, and would prefer to not use any muffling. The problem is I have too much ringing...
I'd go with 16. I have 16 + 18, always use the 16 when using only one FT.

Waiting for a Tama StarPhonic Alu that I have on order. It is going to be sweet!
Petter
Totally agree. I though my drums needed a shorter decay. Well, I am not convinced anymore....
Petter
Well, I could appreciate his drumming. He is fantastic! But not all that good at tuning, though... :)
Petter
What a difference in sound it makes to hear your kit from out in front, played by someone else!
My kit sounds really good! Good to know when I'm all stressed out about the tuning...
Petter
Man! You guys in the US only pay $10-$12 for a head!? I'd change heads every week!

Is Carmine Appice on this forum? I guess he would know.
Petter
drummer in my band cut his off, and there is one draw-back. he has the hats and the snare really tight. when recording it would be nice to get them further apart to get better separation, but it is...
I always though your first kit should be a Tama, but what do I know?
Petter
Neither would I, but the OP liked the sound of an Genera HD on a 14" FT. Just saying that G2s will not give that sound, whatever it is...
Petter
I think it works really well. Maybe the biggest advantage is that they stay where you put them.
Petter
I cannot imagine that a Genera Dry would sound anything like a G2 on a tom, but I have not tried it.
Petter
I agree that the control rings deaden the drums too much. The niceness of the high harmonics disappears (though I have G2 / Glass Reso). Don't know about the coated, but the clear ECs have much more...
Mine split after 3 hours. Not what I expected... I have the kick tuned really low, so the reso is flapping about quite a bit.

Dave Weckle has a way of holding the stick more between thumb and middle finger than thumb and index finger. The index finger is more of a guide for the stick. This is a technique that works really...
I am not a jazz guy, far from it. But since I got excited by a ride today, I thought i'd answer anyway.
Tried a Paiste Giant Beat 24" today in the store. It was great! Better than the Ks. I want...
The G1s should be brighter with more sustain.
I have EC resos on my drums, and I feel that they give too much sustain, which I am having problems tuning my way out of. And the fundamental is so...
The Staggs stuff I have heard is not really worth discussing, but those bells seem OK.

Hardly ever use a wood beater, but they are often a little heavier. This might throw your timing off, and takes a while to get used to.
Petter
I use ProMark. They last longer than Vic. The Japanese Oak is a bit too heavy for my taste, though. Otherwise, that would be all I ever used.
Petter
I hold my sticks very loose, but still sometimes have this problem when I don't warm up properly. When I get ripping right away, my grip tightens up and I get this pain.
The situation also...
A friend of mine plays left-handed open as well. He has the second FT to the left of the hihat which seems more convenient to me. But what do I know? I am right-handed. :)
Rock on!
