It would help to know what kind of music you play - and the size of the bass drum as well.
In general - on my 22" kicks - I use a clear Remo Powerstroke 3 for a batter and an Ambassador weight...
Mr Thumbs...
You may want to check out You Tube for some excellent drum tuning videos by Bob Gatzen. Just look up / search drum tuning and Bob Gatzen.
Plain old petroleum jelly - otherwise known as Vaseline.
My very first set was a Japanese stencil no-name kit that was given to me by a friend when I was 14.
My First "real" set - about 6 months later (Christmas!) was a set of black Tama Rockstars. I...
I suspect that the colored cymbals that are out there are lacquered like many regular cymbals... but the lacquer is simply tinted and maybe a little heavier.
I remember the Paiste Color Sound...
You could probably do this with LED lights. LEDS are very small but very powerful.
My guess is that powder coated cymbals (if they indeed exist) are designed from the get-go to be powder coated - so any effects of the coating on the sound are accounted for in the manufacturing...
You can generally assume that the retail outlet you are purchasing your musical instrument from paid about 40% to 50% off list or MSRP for the item you are buying. Work up from that to see what kind...
Glad somebody mentioned Steve Shelley... He's on my "rotating" list of faves also.
IMO Remo Emporers sound "livelier" than G2s. I think they sustain a bit better and have more upper mids. I also do not like the way G2s feel at JAW tunings. The difference is subtle though.
Good luck with your new instrument!
I took guitar lessons in my early 20's and it was a great expansion of my musical knowledge.
Looks like Max Weinberg's son Jay is now playing on tour with Bruce Springsteen.
Oh - and then there's Jason Bonham as well...
Good luck with your audition! It's never too early to start playing with other people. I started playing the drums by playing in a band when I was 14 - and I never looked back!
This list changes a lot over the years but I guess right now....
1.) Keith Moon (The Who)
2.) Ringo Starr (The Beatles)
3.) Buddy Rich
4.) Brendan Canty (Fugazi)
5.) Stewart Copeland (The...
Easy- I hate hauling all my gear around. Sometimes I wish I could just teleport my stuff to the gig.
Honestly - kudos for being so concerned about proper tuning this early in your drumming career! It took me a couple of years to start really worrying about such things...
The best advice I can...
Another remedy for too much snare buzz is to tighten the four lugs on either side of the snare beds. This will distance the head from the snare wires a bit.
If your finish is lacquer - beware of any polish with silicone in it as it tends to make any refinishing / repairing of the finish a total nightmare... It can also cause cloudiness that will never...
I figured I would be OK for now with what I have... They are very "all purpose" cymbals I guess...
I will more than likely pick up some Ks If I continue down this path... I may also take a good...
I'll echo the others... save up and get better cymbals. Lower end drums can be made to sound better with head selection, tuning etc... but cymbals can't be "fixed" they are what they are. And the...
Wow... I'm confused by the closed mindedness on display here. Why is it so difficult to believe that a drummer could master two completely different styles of drumming? In my 20+ years as a...
I've had nylon tips fly off before. But only a couple of times. But I don't really use them much any more except for a little extra ride / hat brightness during recording... so it's been a while....
:drumset-3:
So... After years of playing mostly rock, blues etc... I am beginning a foray into jazz drumming...
My question is regarding cymbals... Out of my current collection of pies -...
I love the feeling of when you know a song so well you can just get lost in it. When it's just pure emotion and you don't need to think about it anymore.
