If the minor tuning techniques don't work, you need some gate and or compressor.
Never played through a mic'd kit that wasn't gated/compressed that sounded well.

Ahhhhhhhh it's mostly in the tuning and of course the sound engineer. I've heard crappy snares sound killer in the right mix. And Great snares sound clunky.
Soooo many good snare sounds out there....

I was going to say that I seen one years ago and I thought they were long flat pieces of thin metal of some sort.
Not sure what this instrument is called but it sounds similiar to two small splash cymbals stacked but I'm sure it's not.
