You my friend are basically going to be a human metronome. The bass drums hold the whole percussion section together. You have to keep the pulse going. Keep the beat in your feet.
I think thats a personal thing. Alot of jazz drummers have/had alot of different preferences that were all pretty unique. I think of it as the more diverse generation of drummers back in the day.
