I recently picked up an Evans hd dry snare head and it really brings out a nice dry sound, no moon gels necessary. It's usually in stock at the local guitar centers too.

Yea I haven't used anything but floor toms with legs, i guess it comes down to what your used to. But I'm def going to give the extra stand a try to see if it suits me.
