Maple 8-ply for my Custom Yamaha set. One can get Mahogany, but it is almost double the price and shell sizes are limited.

6 ply all maple. i like maple for its warm round tone. if i had my choice i would have a mix ply kit, much like pearl reference kit. 8" is all birch 10" is birch & maple 12" is all maple 13" and up maple w/ a little mahogny and a little more mahogany as you go up in size, for low end.
reference snare is 20ply 6 inner birch 1 ply maple.

My set is made of Phillipine Mahogany/Juniper Shells.I like the mix of Mahogany and Juniper because it has a really warm/soft tone,Which I prefer....
