unfortunatly, this is a tuff hobbie to get into if you got no scratch, if you are talking bottom line, just something to beat on kits. they are all about the same. you can find really bad kits w/ cymbals and hardware for right around 200 bucks. like this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2007-5-PIECE...QQcmdZViewItem
if he can spend a little more he could do a little better with a peace kit like this. http://cgi.ebay.com/PEACE-DEMOLITION...QQcmdZViewItem

I would definetly buy a used cheap Pearl, Tama, or Ludwig set over buying a new cheap set like Enforcer, Rhythm Trader, Sound Percussion, etc...
You will get more bang for your buck that way.

Definitely stay with brand name. The quality is better. Pearl exports were always a good choice for the money.

well, huge difference between Pearl Exports and DWs, my friend.....don't get me started, lol....but I would definitely agree that he should be looking at a used Export kit or something else of a brand name.....but if he has NO money, then I guess he's S.O.L., huh?

I'm glad there's a little love for the Rockwood kit.

I just picked one up around christmas for $80. I found it on Craigslist.

I agree with getting new heads. The stock heads are junk.

It now has new Aquarian Performance II heads on the toms.

EBay, or EBay Local if you want to try it out before you buy. There is nothing wrong with used as long as it works.

Tama Rockstars are an older generation of Tama's intermediate level drum kit and sell for pretty decent prices on Ebay.

The Stagestar is their starter kit and sells very cheap.

Try to stay away from new cheap drumkit. They don't sound great, generally have crappy cymbals and are the worst when it comes time to upgrade.

If you can, look for a secondhand brand-name kit. Something along the lines of an Pearl export series, Tama etc. Some of the Linko kits aren't too shabby, I've used one for the past 5 years and only just upgraded to my new kit.

Hope you find something that works and fits your price range dude,
