What pedal/beater with your e-kit?

I will admit my predjudice. I dislike rubber e-pads, especially the kick pad. I intend to have a mesh-pad e-kit.

That being said, I know that DW and Pearl pedals work fine with mesh kick pads. In fact, the mesh kick pads seem to respond with far greater rebound than an acoustic bass drum. It's like a trampoline! It's silly-easy to play very fast on an e-kit.

I am surmising (without trying it) that all an e-kit would/should need would be a lightweight felt beater like tama iron cobra. The rebound and sensitivity should not require anything of higher mass, but I have not tried this pedal/beater on a mesh kit.

Comments? What do you use? Would the IC work as well or better?

Id use an old traditional felt beater. It would absorb the impact more and give you a more realistic rebound.

Hi: I think I read somewhere that felt beaters should not be used on a "bare" mesh head without used some kind of patch on the head to avoid either the felt from wearing out the mesh,or the mesh wearing out the felt beater. I use a patch ob my mesh head with felt beater! Huck

So a few comments. I tuned my pad down to feel like a real drum, I hate the "tennis racket" feel. You can't use a felt beater according to Roland. I have DW pedals so I simply turn the beater around to get the plastic side.

Bizarre that soft felt would be more damaging than harder plastic!

I know one of the big no-no's is playing mesh when it's tensioned too low, otherwise risk damaging the transducer.

And loose is exactly the way every gc displays them!

So, I am probably going to stick with a pearl 2002c eliminator. The quadbeater has both surfaces.

Pedals was kind of a non factor here, I was just wondering what type of beater really. I was not aware that roland said no felt.

I will be using the Pearl 2002c and quadbeater.

I'm confirming that felt is not advisable for the KD8. Felt slowly ate up my rubber!
So I used the plastic instead but my IC plastic beater had a nasty seam/ridge from the mold used in manufacturing it so it left a mark on my drum head.
I'm now going to make a trip to the shop for some drum patch and a rubber or wood beater.

ive been wanting to try different beaters for a while just have not got a round to it. now i use a stock tama pedal and dw 7000 both on plastic side both beaters seem to big for my setup

I first used felt on Pintech mesh, but the mesh slowly chewed away the felt after awhile. So, I switched to IC rubber and Slugger plastic beaters. I've never used the kick patches, but many do and swear by them.

As for the mesh bounce, I've played on a Pintech 10"/12" kicks and currently on a 16" kick with Pintech triggers and Hart mesh heads. The 10" was fine to play on, but I needed to insert some foam behind the 12" and 16" kick mesh to deaden the double-tap bounce effect.

As someone who has switched from acoustic to electric (yes my kit!)...I didn't have to change my beaters (I use the felt side of my eliminator beater head)

I have been using my Eliminator 2002's with the felt beater and it started eating away at my rubber KD-8 kick trigger. I have changed the quad beater to the plastic side now. I believe the felt side would do the same to a mesh head as well.

The fibres of a felt beater can work their way inside a mesh head - that's the reason they are not recommended.

I would think a light beater and a direct drive pedal such as a Pearl Demon Drive or Axis would be ideal because of their speed. Double chain drives deliver more volume and punch but it wouldn't be needed on an electric kit.
