I was told to play Bo Diddley to "shave and a haircut two bits", and to tune toms to "three blind mice". Funny.

There’s no one way to do something. If anyone tells you otherwise, proceed with caution.

Although this is an ood thread, I figured I would post a little Trick that i stumbled upon. Most drum instruction encompass how to hold ypur sticks - use a Fulcrom on the fingers for control. I found that while tuning a drum, if I held the drum key in my hand and hit the drum, it Forced that use of a Fulcrom with me Index and thumb!. It's worth a shot.
