    Default Floating Snare

This may have already been chatted about but i can't seem to find the thread. Could someone please tell me the difference between a floating snare and the normal set up. Is it literally there aew less things attached to the snare drum?
    Cheers

Floating snare usually refers to something like the pearl free floater....... where the shell really has nothing directly attached to it.

The rogers dynasonic was a genuine floating snare drum.........where the snare wires are free from the butt and throw. The wires are independently mounted on a frame, they are under a constant tension, and the throwoff then is used to bring them up to barely kiss the reso head. This results in a high degree of sensitivity, and your wires are never stretched or over tensioned. One of the greatest snare drum designs in history.

This pic shows the Dynasonic snare wire tension screw, that when properly set, will tension the snares to 'sing" ..... they wont be choked, loose or overly stretched.

Yep, what Ploughman said. A free floater doesn't have lugs bolted to the shell. The shell is held in place by the constant pressure of the tension rods placing pressure upon each bearing edge, with the lug floating on the outside of the shell. With this set up, a free floater snare can utilize multiple size shells interchangeably.
