I keep a stack of paper with me - if something good comes up, write it down. It helps you remember the beat, but also look at it freshly and think about permutations.

Most of my best riffs have come when I wasn't deliberately looking for them!

Besides, either of two things can happen with a tape recorder:

    1) The drumming keeps going and going and going, but the batteries don't; or

    2) When you play the tape back, it doesn't even remotely sound as great as it did the first time!

    Actually, not a bad idea...

BTW, this may be the most-quoted quote on DrumChat, ever!
keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!

I always bring my digital camera with me, mainly just so I can watch myself playing and see where I suck and then go back and try a fix it, but if I play a cool groove, I have it, then I save it on my computer, and then go back and play it for my band, and hopefully write a song, or use it in another song or something like that, its worked great so far.
