HCS cymbals are BAD! A friend gave me a set of 14" hcs hats and a 16" hcs crash and they are easily the worst sounding most unmusical cymbals I have ever hit. I would rather hit my broken zildjians. I have however heard good things about the MB20 series and the Generation X stuff sounds really cool. I think when I win the lottery I'm gonna try some of the MB20's.

Well, by what you just said, go with the Byzance series. I personally would use this exact set up if I were in your position.

14 or 15" Meinl Byzance Medium or Heavy Hi Hats
    20" Byzance Medium Ride
    22" Byzance Heavy Ride
    21" Byzance Medium Ride

You could use crashes, but Byzance rides are amazing crashes.

Meinl is for sure my favourite brand of cymbals. All of their profesional lines sound beautiful. I love dark cymbals and the byzances are perfect for me. I own a 22' byzance medium ride and a 20' byzance thin jazz ride i use as a crash, amazing sounds. I dont think any company is doing as much as meinl.

Anybody ever hear the m series cymbals? I'm intrigued

GC just started carrying Meinl! I have a couple of close friends that work there, so we're going to bring in my set and compare stuff mid next week. (We're going to put a $2,000 price tag in front of my Pulse kit for laughs.) I've got my eyes on a couple of Byzance Traditional Crashes. 20" and 21". Huge!

I bought a cracked 20" Soundcaster china. I successfully repaired it and it is a beast! Love it...love it...love it.

I picked up a Amun 20" Ride and an MB20 10" Rock Splash yesterday. The ride was £125 and the Splash was £65.

I love the sound of both of them. I did get out quite a few other cymbals in the shop and played them side by side so I feel really satisfied with what I have. I also picked up a second hand paiste 16" mellow crash for £120.

Yesterday was a very good day!

Today I will be making some noise!

I just purcahsed an 18" Byzance medium thin crash for $75 Aus. It has a very small crack in it, so ill cut it down to maybe a 15 or 16.

Well after a laborious amount of drum shop visits and audio clip listening, I've narrowed my search for the perfect sound down to:

    MB20 20" Heavy Bell Ride
    Byzance Dark Spectrum Ride
    Soundcaster Fusion 22" Powerful Ride

Anyone have experience with any of these?

Obviously, the Dark Spectrum ride is much different than the MB20 and the Soundcaster, but I can't deny that I love the sound. I guess the only real option is to get an MB20 and the Dark Spectrum Ride, right? Once I invest in that winning lottery ticket, of course.

The Heavy Bell Ride is currently my top choice. Huge ping on the bell, great wash and very articulate.

I got a chance to play the Soundcaster Fusion Powerful ride. The dual lathing makes for some truly unique sounds.

I think the real problem is that Meinl just doesn't make a single bad cymbal. Too many to choose from.

Edit-- I've since elevated the Pure Metal Ride to "Tool of the Gods" status, and thus I, a mere mortal, could not yield it properly.

Hmm, 14" Meinl Byzance Dark Hi-hats or the 14" Dark Spectrum hats...

So hard to choose! I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions, I've only tried the dark hi-hats in person, never tried the dark spectrum.. but judging from the sound clips and videos (which isn't a good source, I know, I know) what pair of hi-hats should I choose?

I'm playing mostly rock, metal, blues and jazz.

This is going quite a while back...over a decade ago, but a drummer mate of mine used to mix a few of the old line Meinl Rakers with Paiste Rudes that he had. If you've never seen the Rakers, here's what one looks like:

Notice the similarity to the unlathed and darkish bells of the Paiste Rudes?

My mate Mick had a few Raker splashes, a crash and I think his china was also a Raker or something similar, all mixed in the the Paiste Rudes.. the splashes really did cut through yet with a sweeter sound than 10" Rude splashes tend to do.

I am now the proud owner of a Byzance Serpents Ride.

I went to try out the 22" Heavy Bell Ride (which is epic in its own right) and they had just gotten the Serpents Ride in. After about 20 minutes of "getting to know" the cymbal, I had to take it home. It's incredible. It sounds really cheesy, but I honestly feel like I am playing WITH this cymbal instead of ON it, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

I highly recommend it for anyone.
I've never had a cymbal with this much versatility and responsiveness.

I love meinl, it is all I use. I am currently rockin 20 " byzance traditional sizzle ride, took two rivets out so there is only two for just the right amount of sizzle. I am using 14 meinl traditional hi hat medium. Great hats, strong chick strong open, cuts, very good hats. meinl 16 byzance traditional china selling it for a 18" traditional flat china, and changing my other meinl cymbals to 21" traditional byzance medium crash, 20" powerful crash soundcaster fusion crash 20" thin ride soundcaster fusion ride...I have a 14 soundcaster fusion 14 crash and 10 splash, great washy clean, warm cymbals. I really like the unique sounds meinl cymbals produce, I am using the byzance traditional/soundcaster fusion mix.

I used a few classics for a little while, actually pretty good sounding cymbals, I think the best bang for the buck in the meinl line very reasonable price. I had 18 medium crash 17 crash and 14 crash, I also think they make 15" hi hats. I only use meinl so I can't compare them to paiste.

It's still very shiny though. Love this ride...
