im scheduled to be going in to audition for a classic rock type band soon, and was wondering what i need to know to increase my overall chances of consideration. i dont play a ton of classic rock, but if i hear it on the radio ill start playing along okayly. what songs/beats should i know? what should i tell them? from what i understand they are managed by two of the actual female members who sing and possibly play guitar for the group. its a bit far to go to practice with them, but i dont mind. so again, just any overall considerations i should have to get in with them? thanks

i like to play it easy and stuff. i remember something ?uestlove said once, it was a formula on how to play drums that kinda stuck with me: "the snare and the bass drum are your meat and potatoes, the ride/hi hats are like your salad, the crashes are like salad dressing, and the toms or other "toys" are like the condiments to your food, too much and it will just taste bad and you gotta toss it in the trash." ever since i read that i dont dive into toms that much, unless its a song where your using them instead of the hats or ride, like a jungle beat or somethin lively

Classic rock is a very tasteful back beat with solid bass drum. Can play it with a 2-beat feel (BD on 1 and 3) or straight ahead with 4 on the floor.

recommendation for style: if there is a section in the music where they a play a note or two, pause, then another note or two, then do some fills within the pauses
The only way to catch a butterfly is never waiting for the wings.
Keep it simple and play the main groove. Watch the band and try to read them for breaks etc.. I would be honest with them up front, don't tell them you know songs you do not.
Relax and have fun
if it doesn't work out, you can always go back and try again under an alias.

Just play it like you MEAN IT!!!
all the best...

Few weeks ago at rehearsal, I had the big band run through a terrific arrangement of Beyond The Sea featuring a Flugel Horn and alto Sax duet.
We have a decent horn player and he did okay. I took it through again but, this time, I said to him..."Play it like you MEAN it." He gave me a quizzical look and, onjce again, I said like you MEAN it. Let me tell you, he floored all of us with what he came up with for his solos...the most incredible thing I ever heard from him...PERFECT!!!
On the flip side, we have a 2nd Alto sax player who says that it's a good thing he doesn't earn his living playing in a band. I told him that he should play as if he were.
The point is, it's our Attitude that determines our success...or failure. It's all up to us.

If you are up on your classic rock you should be fine. Remember to get the set list and learn the ones you need to.
