Default 20 ply piccolo snare UPDATE!!!!!

Ok so its no Tama restoration, but I am now embarking on making a piccolo snare drum. Ive played some snares and found that I really loved the way piccolo snares sound. Lots of snare response. I looked into buying a piccolo snare. I wanted a wood one, because I dont like the ringing of metal. After failed attempts on ebay I was going to buy a Pearl maple piccolo. Its listed about 230$. I saw alot of people on this site making their own drums, and after pricing it out it was cheaper to make my own, not only that I could buy little bits at a time.

I settled on a 20 ply piccolo snare, that I bought off of Drum Gear online (great customer service!). I had them drill it and stain it black. I bought all the hardware and just got the shell today. Heres everything ready to go!

I was going for all black, lugs, rims, tension rods. I was going to do black heads and snare wires, but sound is more important than looks so I bought Puresound blasters.

Im going to the hardware store tommarow to buy mounting screws, tung oil, and satin laquer. Ill keep you all posted with pics!

Just Tung oiled it today. Tommarow after the oil has time to settle in Im going to run some #0000 steel wool over it and then some lemon oil. When I mocked it up I used a spare Emperor for the reso but it has stick marks all over it, so Id rather have a new head, and also a single ply, so I have to buy a new one.

Id post pictures but the shells the same...just shiny. So ill post some tommarow if you all would like.

And yes Defcon, its all maple, all 20 plys!

    Thanks for watching!

That's gonna be awesome! Almost tempting me to do the same thing . With 20 ply it will be a nice, powerful, loud piccolo snare I expect. Should be great!

    Looks very cool.

Do you mind posting the cost for all that gear? Seems like it would add up quickly... 20 ply shell w drilling and stain, tung oil and lacquer, hoops, snare wire, new heads, lugs, tension rods, etc.

I get an urge to do my own snare every once in a while... and nice work like that makes the urge return!

UPDATE!!!!! It took forever!!! Ive never put together a snare (a 20 ply at that) so it was all trial and error. I used machine screws and they must have been the incorrect size so the lugs didnt stay. I found some drum screws that fit a 20 ply shell and it worked! They wouldnt screw in all the way though (I think due to the crap screwdriver I was using). I gave it to my girlfriends father who is a drummer and very handy. He slapped it together in no time. It sounds awesome! I think after I play it a while I may change heads. The Powerstroke 3 seems to make the drum sound hollow, but I havent played it enough to really say. It got a little banged up with all the screwing and unscrewing, but otherwise its nice...here it is:

    Look at them 20 plys!

Scottie Guns wanted a gear breakdown so here it is:

20 ply shell, drilled, and stained: 180$

    Triple flanged hoops: 30$

Butt plate and throw off: 30$

    Puresound Blasters: 23$

    Heads: 16$

total: 280$ (Not including tung oil, tape, and other stuff like that)

Hoope you all like it.....I sure do!

Excellent job Yoda! Next time you'll just have to use the Force to get those screws in place.
