counting in other than 4/4
Hey. lildrummerboi, welcome aboard! Here are the foot patterns for some of the common time signatures. In all of these, R--right foot is your bass pedal, L--left foot is your high-hat pedal)
2/2 (two beats per measure, half note gets a beat):
1, R; "and", R and L; 2, R; "and," R and L
2/4 (two beats per measure, quarter note gets a beat):
1, R; 2, L; 3 R, 4 L
3/4 (waltz time; three beats per measure, quarter note gets a beat):
1, R; 2, L; 3, L
4/4, well you know that one, of course!
5/4 ("Take Five" beat): 5 beats per measure, quarter note gets a beat):
Two versions:
1, R; 2, L; 3, R; 4, L; 5, L; or
1, R; 2, L; 3, L; 4, R; 5, L;
6/8 (blues beat): 6 beats per measure; eighth note gets one beat):
like 3/4 time except it's counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...bass on 1 and 4, high-hats on 2, 3, 5 and 6....
You might also want to refer to some basic drum books, too, since it's easier to read music notes than my footnotes... Good luck and
keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!
