LOL.....Im with you P , but I got the book for X-Mas and havent had too much time to read it yet .

I skimed my way thru it and it does seem to get pretty detailed .Like anything else , you just need time to practice .

I was interested in seeing different ways to spin the sticks and it does show a couple ways . Good luck with it Mark .

Me three. I had to stop playing last night after about the fourth time I had to walk across the room and pick up a stick or two.

On the other hand, maybe I could learn to incorporate that into my playing.

ha yeah because who spins sticks now its all about the random stick throw in the middle of the song that gets you offbeat. Lol

I've started incorporating throws into my playing style. It's really easy and fluid, looks and feels good, isn't as hard as it seems. I'm working on playing swiss triplets (I think that's what they're called...Rll, Lrr things) but accenting each single with an upstroke and then throwing the stick out, as a natural extension to the stroke.
I was working on something where I do four beats on one hand, throw the stick in the other hand in the air on the third beat, throw my stick across to the other hand on the fourth beat and keep on playing, then catch the other stick in the air. Nails.
Stick throws are really good if you can incorporate them into your playing in a way that you'll benefit from it. I'm working out how to do a 16th note hi-hat groove with a stick throw on every downbeat. Good fun!

Good thread markthechuck. Showmanship adds so much to the entire presentation of a band and really gets me into any show I attend.

I too was practicing some simple spins and gave up. I was too concerned about the "show off " factor but then realized that how important is was to excite your audience.

I am put off by drummers who can barely keep time but can twirl sticks. In my opinion, you better be really tight and spot on before attempting to enhance the visual aspect of your performance. In other words, you better have the goods before attempting be become a showman and a crowd pleaser.

    I've been tossing sticks, too.

Unfortunately, my bassists won't give them back after getting hit with them. The singer hates slipping on them lying all over the stage and the guitarist uses them for slides.

    I need a new gimmick.

Try these on for size as an anti-stick throwing device. Found them on E-Bay.

There not to bad. Feels like a big ring. Just like everything else, they take a getting used to period. For $10.00 (overpriced like everything else), it's better than throwing sticks around all the time.

I keep a bag of sticks situated right under the bottom hat cymbal. If I throw one, I can be back in business within a beat or two. If it is the left stick, I simply substitute the back beat with the right hand. That way no groove is lost.

    all the best...

yeah I am sure I would have a bag of sticks if i was going to play live. Funny thing right I think I have like 3 working pairs of sticks. And two of them are wood tip which I dont like as much as nylon.

I am wanting to work on that, I can spin my sticks pretty well in my right hand, unfortunatly that is the hand that moves the most. I am working on my left handed spinning so I can throw in some spins and maybe a toss or two in some songs every now and then. I don't have a big problem with dropping sticks, although occasionally I throw them out of frustration..
