Default Snare Tuning -Neil pearts Signals "Sound"

I just love the way Pearts snare sounds on the signals album.
    Especially Digital Man.
In Fact I love the sound of his whole kit...Tunings and such.
Taking the effects and mikes into consideration..
Any Idea's on to achieve that sound?

    Tight snare? Loose snare?

    Thanks,

Sounds like your average Pearl stock snare Tuned to A on snare side and C# on the batter side.
Just can't find that snap he has.

    hey CB,

No, not quite a rubber band on hardwood...lol. That would sound snappy sure, but it would also lack any depth or character.

If you've heard Pearts Signals Kit it would be easier to communicate what I'm asking i guess.
I'm looking for what percent of THAT "sound" is Techno magic, room resonance and the snare itself. I doubt I'll ever be able to afford that particular snare, so making do with what I have and getting as close to it as I can is really what I'm after.

    Thanks!

I have no idea how to get the sound, but I was listening to Signals today (and particularly Digital Man) on my drive home and that's a nice snare sound.

He's got good attack, some warmth, and a good snare buzz without sounding thin.

NP used a 5x14 Slingerland up until Test for Echo (karma eh?). No word on age, although it must be something from the late 60's to early 70's. He says it's the 2nd from the top model, the Artist model. He also claims he has another identical one that doesn't sound as good. Thinks the original owner might have messed with the bearing edge by the snare bed.

Given that he used the snare on numerous albums before Signals you have to figure that the exact sound you hear is tuning, mic'ing, and production.

Search for "SLINGERLAND 1-Ply Maple BLACK MARINE PEARL SNARE 50-60" and you'll see one that is supposedly the same model.

Digital Man is my all time favorite Rush song. That snare Neil uses on the tune has such a snap!

Another suggestion.. If possible, get a piccolo snare.
