I have the X. From the floor up, both pedals are identical until you come to the direct drive cam. At the top of the X, it attaches to a piece where the beater is inserted. On the A, this piece also has a thin metal pin, to which the cam attaches. The A allows you to slide the point of the drive's attachment a wee bit up and down along this pin and tighten it with a wingnut, altering the beater distance back and forth, and I'm guessing the footboard height. I found the X and liked it, and figured ten years down the line or so the pin on the A could become chewed up, or the wing nut stripped, or merely slip and be an annoyance. Even if none of those three happened, it was a feature I simply did not see myself using, so I went with the slightly simpler design of the X.
