Hey, timpanist09! I confess hand drumming fanatics like me sometimes forget that "percussion" includes a wider range of instruments than most people think.

Do you play in a symphony or show orchestra, or are you a student? Either way, I'd like to find out more about one of the few percussion instruments that I haven't tried yet.

    Thanks--and

unamed, basically my friend set him self up on the drum kit, anouther on the congas/bongos/a few hand cymbals and me on the timps and the drum kit player gave us a groove

then we all just kind of played along. we've been jamming like this after band classes for about 2 months now and its a load of fun

basically i was useing a lot of cross over exersises on the timps. If you want i can draw out a little description of it for you. its just some basic ones tho

When you tuning do you use the stick or your finger?
    Do you set the gauges?
    Use a tuner?

Actually I think you and Daemon answered some of my questions in your posts...I suspect many, if not all the rudiments of the set are used in playin' tympani...

and Daemon, I can only imagine how cool the tymps sound offsetting bongos and congas...

your right, most rudiments are used, but bounce strokes are NEVER used on the timpani unless the song absolutely demands it! the bounces just dampen the drum and it doesnt sound very nice at all. but doubles can still be used if the second stroke is another full stroke.
