Concrete Building, I think you have it backwards, I play rudimental bass in an ancient rudimental drum line, and we use replicas of instruments from the Revolutionary, and Civil War error. The drums we use have cat gut snares (now made of nylon, so no cats were harmed in the making of our instruments). During these time period there were no tenor drums used those parts were played on the rudimental bass drum, which played basically the same part as the snares without the rolls, and flams. Tenor drums were not used until after the Civil War. My experience though is with American and British rudimental drumming, so I'm sure in other parts of the world drums similar to tenors were used first.
