    Default Bass Drum Question

When I was younger I had a set and I recall there being a hand made quilt in it. What was that for?

Apply same question to "ported base drums" please?

Well alot of drummers like their bass drums mufflled..this was a way of adchieving that..some used pillows that rested onto drum head..if you remember is school band the bass drum player always had his opposite hand on the reso side to control unwanted vibration.. some newer drum heads have a built in muffle ring..but it doesn't always adchieve the sound wanted by the type of music you are into..hope this helps, i am sure others will sound off..

Port hole allows for more air to rush through and increase the volume. Also, comes in handy if you mic the bass drum.

Thanks for clearing it up. I figured as much about the both questions but wasnt positive.

How many of us muffle the bass and use ports?

I have a large pillow in my bass drum because I'm currently using an unmuffled, regular single ply head. Eventually though I'm going to get a muffled 2 ply head (like an Emad2) and remove everything from inside.
