    Newer members:
This is a "clean" forum. We don't tolerate excessive cussing, flaming, stalking, pornography, overly-suggestive remarks, promotion of drinking, smoking, illicit drugs, guns, or anything else deemed immoral, unethical, hateful, deceitful, illegal, and/or simply unhealthy for our society. Those in violation will be permantly banned.

While many of us here have probably indulged in at least some of the aforementioned in our lives, we've also learned that's it's not terribly good for you and in fact can often lead to a life of dispair, addiction, and/or death. Despite the path of much of our society today, we at Drum Chat would rather promote more positive things in life such as taking care of yourself, treating each other with respect and kindness, and pursuing wisdom. These are the things that enable "true" happiness and oneness with your creator.

If you don't agree with these things, you should find another forum. Otherwise, welcome again to what we feel is one of the finest drum forums on the net.

How did guns get mixed in with porn and swearing. That's like saying we can't talk about scissors or post hold diggers?

I agree that the topics of the those ideas should not be disallowed as long as the theme/content of the thread is healthy to our society. IMO censorship is much more harmful than the topics it tries to protect us from.

Drum Chat is privately owned, and they are perfectly free to censor anything they like. I would like to point out, however, that we have handled some very touchy subjects ( i.e. religion, faith, economics, politics, etc.) and have done so in an exemplary manner. It's really cool to be able to talk about different topics with people of widely divergent opinions and beliefs in a respectful way. It would be a shame for us to loose that privilage. While it's true that this is a drum forum, Drum Chat has become more than just a place to talk about percussion. This is a community of friends who enjoy talking about all kinds of things, from the merrits of Pres. Bush's policies to the relative goofyness of keytars. It seems silly to me to have an arbitrary rule that says "firearms must not be mentioned whatsoever". We're pretty good at self policing. I think the record of our posts to this site bear this out.

I hope I havn't gone off half-****ed or jumped the gun in anyway here.

RD, I think you're blowing it out of proportion a bit. They never said "firearms must not be mentioned whatsoever". If you'll read it again, it starts off with, "We don't tolerate excessive cussing, etc. etc. etc....". I believe the key word here is "excessive". Rather than argue about particulars, it's important to point out that most of what is said in Drum Chat remains intact and hasn't bothered anyone. But as this forum grows, we've noticed some that think they can say "anything". And that's simply not the case. You've got to have some rules, and people will continually push the boundaries. Any visit to an "unmoderated" forum will prove this. First and foremost we want Drum Chat to be a respectable place to visit, for all ages.

Keep in mind, it's hard to maintain a balance and please everyone. We will always do our best to let people speak their minds. But you can't do everything in here that you'll be able to do in some of the other forums. We don't allow excessive cussing, avatars that resemble porn, promotion of drugs, etc. We've even slapped some members on the wrist for trying to turn this forum into a recruitment center for Christianity. Will we get some heat over some of these issues? Yes. But again, it's hard to please everyone. All we can do is stand up for what we believe in and hope that people respect our efforts.

Totally understood. I was just surprised to see guns lumped in with the other stuff.

I'm also surprised at the christian issue. I was impressed when I first found this site that there was a Christian Drummers forum. I felt that this was, and is, a very christian friendly place. We've had some great discussions and havn't been shy about sharing our faith. So far I haven't gotten slapped on the wrist, but I'm wondering just where the line is drawn on that one?

Again, I guess the line is drawn at the word "excessive". We've actually gotten flack from members that didn't like the fact that we gave Christians their own forum. What are we supposed to do, have a separate forum for Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Shintos, Pagans, and Scientologists? You just can't please everyone. It's impossible.

    Annie, get your gun!

I guess you could just have one for everyone called "Drummers of Faith", which would cover everything from Mormonism to Atheism. If you did that we christians would have to be very careful how we engage others. I dunknow, I really like the idea of teaching the legions who don't know how to disagree respecfully how to stand up for their ideals without attacking others personally. It's a lost art. I know for a fact that you and I are worlds apart on some issues, but you've always shown me respect, even when you think my stance on an issue is dorky. I wish there was a lot more of that in the world.

Totally agree. I'm agnostic, but that said, I don't come in here and attack people for having a different view than me. We're all united by one common faith, drumming.

Many people get touchy when it comes to belief and faith, but here on Drumchat, I think we all get along swimmingly.

    Cool Please Read

Like anything else, the Internet can be a great way to communicate--or a great way to make a complete jerk of yourself.

Personally, I find it refreshing that there are so many drummers who use their talents in Christian worship. I've made friends with a few guys (and gals!) who, as I once commented to one of them, are "brothers in more than just bongos."

At the same time, I've made friends with other drummers who have different beliefs, or none at all. That doesn't make them any better or worse than any other person who uses this chat room. The one thing we agree on most is that we love drumming.

At my day job at a St. Louis radio station, I learned many years ago that we can "disagree without being disagreeable." It doesn't always work, but I've learned it works more often than not.

I've also had to revoke calling privileges to those who engaged in many of the same things su_admin described in his first post. That's the key, buddies--using this forum is a privilege, and if you misuse it, you lose that privilege. Simple as that!

    End of soapbox...now let's
keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!

Well said, bongobro. Speaking for myself, please, always feel free to tee off on my beliefs and views. I happen to think that most of what I think is reasonably well thought out, so I'm not afraid to enter the arena of ideas. Lets fight it out and see who's concepts are the strongest. You can say my views are idiotic, just don't say I'm an idiot. It's a fine distinction, but a very important one.

Let me give an example for those who are not used to this kind of interaction. Let's say I post that I believe that my cat spends his nights, not prowling the neighborhood, but going to college studying engineering. The logical resonce would be "That's a pretty far fetched belief. Where's your evidence, Roaddebris?", instead of saying, "Dude, you're the biggest moron I've ever met online". Even though I would be a moron if I believed that, it's not civil to say so and saying so would make debate on the subject very difficult.

Your talking about flat out respect for others, my friend. I totally agree with you in that that, in and of itself, has become a lost art form. It's not enforced in schools, a lot of parents don't have the time to teach it, or they just don't care because they have too many problems to deal with already (which promotes the behavior). Life is hectic and most people don't reflect on what they have done that day that had a positive or negative influence on others. Unfortunatly, we are going through the self proclaimed "me" generation that thrives on instant gratification. If someone does'nt share your beliefs, then you become a threat/problem that can just be sidestepped so that person can move on to something more satisfying that strokes their ego. Please, don't get me wrong, I'm not picking on anybody, this is just my opinion. I have the utmost respect for quite a few members of this forum and would never attack anyones' character just because we don't see eye to eye.

I think admin made a good call, while drummer, RD, and Bro' have made some very good points.

........I forgot where I was going with this.......

    Oh Yeah!
