Anyone remember these puppies? I used to be in love with my teacher's Rancan china. That thing was awesome. I found one online today. I'm so tempted to get it... Hahaha.

Definitely get it! I sure remember them.....both Meinl in their early days as well as LP used to have these in their lines...authentic Chinese made stuff. They also used to manufacture some really nice 'cup chime-like' "Lion cymbals' and there were Rancan splashes too, which are even harder to find.

I had always thought these were the same as Wuhans in sound. Are they not? I've seen several for sale but have always passed them by...

As for the cup chimes, are you referring to 'jing cymbals'? These look similar to the lion cymbals but are small (6" to 8") and heavier. Some sound similar to ice bells or cup chimes - in fact I used to own one that sounded very much like the Zildjian 6" Zilbel but much more musical. When that cymbal was played it actually produced a noticeable chord due to the harmonics. Very cool.

As far as the cups, I am uncertain... but I do know this... the original LP Rancan was one of the best chinas I've ever heard. Of course, this was many many years ago and I am sure I could be wrong. They probably varied in sound as the Wuhans do. My teacher at the time had an awesome Rancan. I am pretty sure it was a 16". Rancan got remade later on by another company I think... not as good.
