Hey, Metal-head--for a dude who can't put down his sticks, you're becomin' quite the hand drummer!

Here's a website for those who want to see what a doumbek looks like (most look like shrunken djembes, but others look like metal goblets, hence the nickname "goblet drums...")

and here's one for those who want to play it...

...and of course I'm sure DrumBum.com has links as well...

I enjoy playing the doumbek, too...it's even easier to take with you on a road trip than bongos...let me know how it works for you!
keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!

Oh man, doumbeks' are a blast to play! I have 2 aluminum doumbeks (6" and 8" heads) that I play all the time. They are so bright sounding and are great for adding accents to djembe/ashiko drumming, but you gotta' play them fast. I'm working on a rack system so I can have my conga, bongos, djembe, ashiko, and doumbeks set up all together. That will be the day I put my sticks down for a while.

I think I've played one of these at a Drum workshop once. It was awesome. The presenter was ace at playing Tabla's.

One of the best middle-eastern style doumbek players I know is Souhail Kaspar. I had the pleasure of watching this master at work not to long ago and I recommend that anybody wanting to learn how to play the doumbek check him out. Here are a couple of clips:
