Put some tape, rubber strip, mole skin or whatever on to the hoop where the pedal clamp would otherwise scrape it.

I use sticky backed felt I get at the craft store. I cut a small square and fold it over the hoop so it protects both sides.

I don't have anything to prevent my pedal from leaving marks on my hoop. Nobody can ever see them, and I don't even know if my pedal leaves any marks. As long as you don't split your hoop with your pedal, you should be fine.

on my dw's i made a metal pressure plate with rubber "grippers" on it. all that toutches the wood hoop is rubber. i did this because my hoops are made of wood, you shouldent have to worry about it as much if you have metal rings. sorry no pics of this yet.

to me its a expensive musical instrument and just like any expensive musical instrument you want it to last as long as possible, and to stay clean. i try not to overlook anything when it comes to the health and care of instruments. if its going to damage the instrument, you should probably take the time to fix it.

One thing to think about: Even though nobody sees it, it might help the resell value of the drumset the less scratches or dents there are in it.

I don't have any protection on mine, but all I know is that I've seen many kits, and the majority of good ones had some sort of protection. It definitely wouldn't hurt to put something there.

I ended up getting the Pearl HPP2 hoop protector. Looks like it should do a good job. Its metal on both sides and has a strip of grip tape on top.

Gibralter makes a rubber bass drum pad and it protects both sides of the hoop. I have had mine for seven years now and the protecter and hoop look good as new.
