I know there are no rules, just right, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried an 18x16 floor tom left of hi hat? I know some people have put a 14 in that position.

i used to put my 16x16 on that side. i rarely used it. Mainly i used it for a few fills and one beat i have needed it. So when i moved it to the left it gave me more room on my right for set up and acctully made my kit look more full from all angles. I put it back tho, now that i am using it for more then just a few times a set.

The problem I have is too many toms. I suppose its a nice problem to have, but seriously I'm trying to figure out where to put everything. With an 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 there isn't much room to the right. My 18x18 is way far to the right and behind me. I thought about putting the 14 to the left, but I don't think I like the idea of going from 12 to 16. Seems like figuring out a comfortable set-up is harder than it should be.

which of the floor toms do you use the least??

which ever one that is is the one i would put on the left, then it is out of the way to get to all your toms you use the most.. but you can still get to it when needed.

Chances are yours going to have to put they 18" over there. thats what i would do.

The 18 is used the least. I'm going to try it over there. I'm afraid if I leave it to the right it wont get used at all.

Its probably a good idea to mix things up from time to time anyway to "force" myself to be more creative.

Yeah, I have a 16 x 16 to my right and have used my 16 x 18 on the left side.
It's okay but I soon changed it back. When I gig, I don't take the 18 with me.

I am trying something different by using my 16 to my left and the 13 and 14 for the low right toms. So far I think I like it. With the smaller toms on my right I don't have to twist so far around to get to them. So far so good.

I was out on Tour with Firehouse back in 2004 and Michael Foster used an 18" floor left of the hats..He didn't use it much..

I use a 16" on the left and my 18" on the right. (Right handed setup)

I use it quite often, i like it that way.

it might be good for doing floor tom rolls to snare hits- cause its hard to do it fast on the right side and switch up the hands, whereas when im doing it on the hi hat to snare its a lot easier cause my right-hand can fly to it on the left with ease more so than if it was on the right

I really don't think it's a bad idea at all! One of my best drumming friends, Clint, from the band Asher plays that way and it works great for him. It's just another way of pushing your self and being more creative. Lester Estelle has done that in the past as well. Try it! See how it goes, if you like it and it pushes your playing style great! If not and it's just a spot for it, maybe not leave it there but GIVE IT TIME! That would be my advice, good luck!

If I don't manage to sell my other VX kit I'll be putting the 18" on the left. There's a few reasons... Most of my fills end up with me only hitting that drum with my left hand, so it's silly to reach that far to the right. I don't want to totally rearrange my toms in case I set it up as a second bass drum. It'll take up less room on the right with the 14/16 next to each other, and balance the kit around the center with the 18 on the left. The sizes will be more consistent with my other kit leaving the 14/16 on the right.

I've seen 3 floor toms on the right side arranged in a triangular pattern. You may have to reach out a bit for the farthest one, but that may be better than twisting 90+ degrees to your right.

why not have 2 same size sets of floor toms on each side

i just switche stuff abit, and grabbed a tom from my other kit.
so now i have 10 and 12 inch toms on the bd, 16X14 and 16X16 right of me, and a 13 inch tom left. works awesome, i do think i have to tweak it abit etc. to be able to reach eveything easily.
(i couldnt fit the 13 tom on the bd, and it wouldnt sound to great there.)
