ok so lemme tell you about this cool thing i found on my computer. i have windows XP so this may not apply to everyone's computer but i did notice it on mine. i was bored one day so i was running some system cleanups in the control panels, and i noticed a panel that said "sound effect manager." being yes, very bored i checked it out and noticed it had all this cool stuff like an equalizer, voice cancellation, environment simulation, and more mixer type features. i mean have you guys ever found this on your comp? is it a substitute for a mixer? can you just plug a usb mic into your port and use this thing to do everything?

I have never seen that before on my Windows computer, but that would be awesome if you're right in thinking you could subsitute it for a mixer.

It is not a std Windows XP control panel icon. It prolly came bundled with the sound card driver.

how many simultaneous audio inputs has your 'puter got?
because most only have 2 (left and right) so its not really a substitute for a mixer as your won't be able to individually mic your drums.
It sounds non-standard so I'd agree with CharlyG its probably bundled with your sound card.
Sounds like a cool bonus on your machine - the quality of the effects can be measured by the bitrate of your soundcard, so if it does 16 bit or lower they are not really professional standard effects processing which is at least 24bit

i was thinking of running an mxl 990usb stereo overhead into the slot and downloading some sorta software to edit from there if need be, but it looks like i can do most everything without it unless im sadly mistaken. but wouldnt that be cool to have one inexpensive mic that did it all?

If it is xp media edition then don't use pro tools and digi./m-audio drivers and hardware because they are incompatible. My studio computer runs xp home without the media edition.
