While you certainly can tune the two drums to different notes, it probably won't be that noticeable. I would say it's probably not worth it, but that's just me.
I have two floor toms availible to me right now. I really want to play a one up- two down kit. But; They are both 16". If I tuned them to different pitches, would it be worth it to bring to the gig, or would it sound to close to the fans to even bother doing it? Because my ears are a bit biased

I would get 14/16 or 16/18, not two 16's.

Been there, done that, and would say no, unless you need a table for your beer and towel.
Lars Ulrich has always used floor toms of the same diameter. He used to have 18x14 with a 18x16, but now he uses 16x14 with a 16x16.
I'd generally agree with the stickers. Not worth it.
Why?
1} extra large tom to haul and set up, and care for.
2} no real added sound, depending on music style or sound, IMO it's just flash for the set. If ya don't expect to play it live, don"t haul it.
3} How much deeper tone do ya need on the floor tom run? One is fine, just choose the one best for your needs.
Currently electronics, with some "real" cymbals and a few accesories.
Well, my next kit, I wanna go either 12/14/16 or 13/16/18, one-up, two-down.
But it doesn't matter, because the gig got cancelled when we got there. It was us and 6 other bands(it was like a showcase event), and we got there first, loaded in, and hung out at the drum shop down the road. We got back and the club told us that their sound guy left with the PA yesterday. You'd think they would've told us before we even drove there, or at least wgile we were loading in.
O well
As a longtime 1-up,2-down kinda guy guy,it works for me. A 13 mounted tom and 2 16's, tuned in 3rds, is something I did for years. When i bought my new set of Ludwigs, the 1st addition was a 16 incher. Felt like i've been playing for years without the 25 year "vacation".
trade the extra one in for cash towards an 18 or 14

I did the same thing, save they had different heads on them(a clear emperor and an EC2) so still very similar heads, basically I made the lower of the two to a "trash" tom. It just was for thunder. it worked but I found That I used it very rarely.
All the Best,
Tom
